James played bass
and sang in the hardcore metal band Shadow At Morning from 2006
to 2010, achieving his lifelong dream of headlining Seattle's
Showbox, getting songs spun on most major radio stations in the
Seattle area, and opening for metal legends like 3 Inches of
Blood. Download all the tracks for free below.

The
Science of Science (October 24, 2010)

In 2010, James co-wrote the full-length musical The Science
of Science with Andy Greenlee and Michelle Burce (of
Pants Required) as a surprise present for a friend. James
wrote roughly half the songs, and played the main character of
Arya (seen above in the lab coat with the electric guitar).
Including cast, crew, and live band, the show took about 20 people a
year to write and prepare, all for one night of local theater in
front of a packed house.
Click here to watch from the beginning,
or jump around to specific songs, such as
"Science Will Save Us,"
"The Ranger Song" (yes, it's
about gaming),
"The World Is Going To Hell,"
"Pernicious Cure,"
"What You Need is a Girl,"
"Bein' Manful,"
"Big Damn Hero," and more.

Pants Required
(April 5, 2009)

On April 5th, 2009, James's incredibly
talented friends gave him the most amazing surprise 25th birthday party of
all time. Without his knowledge (despite seemingly everyone he knew being in
on it for months), they wrote, arranged, rehearsed, and
performed a 45-minute musical with a brilliantly impersonated James
as the main character, scoring the whole thing with
reinterpretations of music he'd written. The entire show is up on
youtube - click the poster above to watch the full playlist. (If you just
want to skip around,
"Of Loss" is probably the prettiest and most accessible song.
Or you could go straight to the
erotic shadow puppets in
"The Wake.")
slamDaddy (2000-2003)

From 2000 to 2003, James was the lead
singer/rhythm guitarist for an underage punk band named slamDaddy, which played everything from
Seattle teen clubs to an extremely memorable benefit concert at
Annie Wright's School for Girls in Tacoma. The band self-released two EPs, "Where Didn't We Stick It?" (2002) and "A
Kick In The Junk" (2003), and was positively reviewed on KEXP and in The Stranger before finally breaking up amiably in December of
2003, with James and Z going on to later form Shadow at Morning.
